Mysuru Dasara is Karnataka’s Nada Habba — the state festival. For ten days during Navaratri, the city of Mysuru glows with lights, music and celebration.

The story behind it

Dasara celebrates the victory of the goddess Chamundeshwari over the demon Mahishasura, after whom Mysuru is believed to be named. The goddess’s temple stands on the Chamundi Hills above the city.

A royal tradition

The festival’s grandeur goes back to the Vijayanagara kings, who celebrated Mahanavami on a magnificent scale. The Wodeyars of Mysuru continued the tradition from 1610, and it has been celebrated every year since.

Highlights of the festival

  • The illuminated Mysuru Palace, lit with tens of thousands of bulbs every evening.
  • Ayudha Puja, when tools, vehicles and instruments are honoured.
  • Jamboo Savari on Vijayadashami — the grand procession in which a decorated elephant carries the idol of Chamundeshwari in a golden howdah.
  • Cultural programmes, exhibitions, and the torchlight parade.
Dasara reminds us that light always returns — and that a community celebrating together is a strength in itself.

If you have never seen Mysuru during Dasara, plan a visit. If you have, share your memories with the children in your family.
