ಹನುಮಂತ
Strength that bows only to devotion
Strength guided by devotion — the messenger who crossed the ocean.
The question beneath the legend
“What could you do if you forgot your limits for the sake of someone you love?”
Beyond the familiar story
Cursed as a child to forget his own powers, Hanuman needed others to remind him who he was before he could act.
Many of us carry strengths we have forgotten. Hanuman’s story is a reminder that courage often waits for one voice of encouragement.
Standing at the shore with no way across, Jambavan reminded him of his strength. Hanuman grew, and leapt.
A living legacy
Hanuman is worshipped for courage, health and protection. Temples to him stand in every town, and the Hanuman Chalisa is recited daily by millions.
Chronicle
Hanuman was born to Anjana and Kesari, blessed by Vayu, the wind god. As a child he leapt toward the sun, thinking it was a fruit, and was struck down by Indra — a story that explains his name.
Because his mischief disturbed the sages, he was made to forget his powers until someone reminded him. He grew up as a minister to Sugriva in Kishkindha, where he first met Rama and Lakshmana.
When the vanaras searched for Sita, it was Hanuman who leapt the ocean, found her in the Ashoka grove, gave her Rama’s ring, and set Lanka ablaze. In the war, when Lakshmana lay dying, he carried an entire mountain to bring the healing herb in time.
Asked for no reward but to remain with Rama, he is believed to live on as one of the Chiranjivis — the immortals — wherever Rama’s name is spoken.
Life journey
Son of Anjana and Kesari, blessed by Vayu, he grew up full of strength and mischief until a curse made him forget his powers.
As Sugriva’s minister he met Rama, and found the purpose of his life in service.
Reminded of his strength, he crossed the ocean, found Sita and set Lanka on fire.
After the war he asked only to remain with Rama, and lives on as a Chiranjivi.
“True strength is humble — it serves, it does not boast.”
— The heart of Hanuman’s story
Standing at the edge of the ocean, the vanara army had no way to reach Lanka. Then an old bear reminded Hanuman who he really was.
