In India, sculptures and designs in wood carving have been prevalent since ages. People from various religions, races and backgrounds have preserved this art that has evolved through time. Indian temple sculptures and Indian wood carving have great religious significance, but with the advent of modern technology, people are able to show more variety of styles that portray their individual creativity.
In the Temples, carved wooden idols of Hindu deities are the most common pieces of sculptural output. The designing is usually extremely intricate and includes complex geometric patterns and illustrations of Gods. The head of the statue may be slightly bent to show the intricate carving patterns, while the body and all the aspects of the temple are intricately designed by carver. The other two important aspects of this type of sculptural output is the weaponry and the clothes of the devotee. The weaponry often resembles the original design and is painted with symbolic colors. Wood Carving on the other hand, displays the colors of the deities and also has detailed sketch of the weapons used by them.
In the temples wood carving is usually done for only one deity alone, while in wood carving there are usually two or more sculptures of other gods. The materials used for carving are usually of wood and the process is often difficult. However, this kind of art also symbolizes the religious attachment and fidelity of the Indian people. They also use wood carving for various purposes like adding the features of the deities to the temple walls and also to add the accessories to the statues.
