Understanding How Distillation Works

The process of distillation has been around since the middle ages. Distillation has even been listed in legal documents dating back as far as the 7th century. It was used as a common method for processing spices and herbs into new drugs and medicines. Later on, with the development of more effective processes, distillation was developed as an industrial process. Today, distillation finds many practical uses. It is sometimes used as a simple process of distillation in order to remove water molecules from vaporized substances like fuel and steam.

Simple distillation also removes some contaminants from the liquid itself, though these substances tend to be short-lived and harmless.

Another application of distillation comes in the form of soap production. When fats and oil are added to water, it forms a solution known as lye water. It’s important to have super-fine, fine grain particles in order for this mixture to solidify into soap. If the mixture is coarse, the oils will not be able to solidify into soap because they will clump together with the tiny particles. Only the pure substances will remain as soap. One example of a very simple soap mixture using this method is the soap that many people make at home.

Many foods are cooked using simple distillation, but the process is not used in the cooking process as much as it used to be. One reason is that it is not desirable because of the way it produces foul-smelling liquids. Another is that distillation tends to remove certain healthy vitamins and minerals from the liquids. If you boil foods with vitamins and minerals in them, you may end up with a product that does not taste all that great. The boiling point temperatures used for distillation can result in a release of vapour that tastes bad.

Some methods of cooking require boiling, but that is where fractional distillation steps in. The process consists of adding the ingredients and boiling the mixture, then draining off the mixture into another container with a lower boiling point temperature. The boiling points of these containers can be varied depending on what the individual recipe requires.

When distilling, it is important to understand what type of liquors you will need to use. Water, oil, and alcohol can all be fractioned to produce a solution. Water, in particular, is the densest of the three and is often used in fractional distillation. Most recipes that involve two liquids will use a distilled water solution.
