Smoking in Public Places Should Be Banned

Smoking in public places like restaurants and bars should be banned. Second-hand smoking is even worse, just as second-hand smoking is. People who smoke in these places often do so without even knowing it. They may not feel like they are harming others nearby, but the effect of smoking on others nearby definitely is selfish. Therefore, ban smoking in public places.

How many times have we heard or read about people who have died from lung cancer, throat cancer, emphysema, or other pulmonary diseases? Not all of them were smokers, most of them were non-smokers. The truth is, some of those who died were smokers. How many times have you heard of a person who died from cancer because of smoking? Probably many times.

How many times have you or a friend or family member heard or read about someone who died from smoking? How many times have you met people at the store or bar who had bought cigarettes and then decided to go home and sit on the couch and smoke until the sun comes up? Or how many times have you been on a vacation and met a person on a bus or train who was smoking and talking on the phone or smoking behind you as you walked by? Those people clearly were smoking more than they thought they were.

Smoking is bad for health. But not just bad for your health, it’s bad for other people’s health. Smoking leads to lung cancer, heart disease and other serious health problems. It can cause you to cough up phlegm, cause gum problems and tooth decay.

Smoking in public areas such as restaurants should be banned. Restaurants are usually a hangout for smokers. It is a place where people can talk, socialize and eat. There should be a strong message put across that smoking is not appropriate here.

Public places such as bistros, theatres, waiting rooms at airports and hotels should not be smoking areas. You should not be expected to be able to put your cigarette down for just any amount of time. Many hotels have recently started to adopt this policy. The interesting thing about second hand smoke is that you feel comfortable knowing that others do not have problems with it. None smokers should be allowed to stay within the smoking area if they want to continue smoking. Even second-hand smoke can cause a host of respiratory problems including lung cancer and emphysema.

There are a number of ways that the government and different municipalities have tried to prevent this silent killer. In some cases they have banned smoking in vehicles, schools, libraries and bars. Yet if the non-smokers do not behave, none of these measures will have any effect. The only solution to the problem of secondhand smoke is to persuade all of the smokers to quit. Only then will we ever see an end to the problem of non-smokers bringing in more smokers. So the time has come for governments to enact laws that will ban smoking in all of these public places.
