Varieties of Indian Cornflower

The genus Elemi is a family of grasses, which includes a number of species spread all over the world. One of the most important and most widely distributed among these species is Eleusine Coracana L., or finger millet in Indian English. This plant has been extensively used by the people of India for several centuries for numerous health benefits including the production of sesame oil, millet, sesame seed paste, fenugreek, and jowar. There are many species in this family; however, only a few of them are used extensively in agricultural fields for food and other medicinal purposes. The best places for collecting the edible parts of this grass are Nepal and Kenya, where it grows in large plantations.

The plant derives its name from “ele” (short for English foot) and “coracana” (formally known as Indian cornflower) and the plant is considered as the common ancestor of the modern day crop of the same name. Speedy growth, mild taste, and good texture make it one of the best grains available today for consumption on a daily basis as a nutritious food supplement, which provides significant vitamins, mineral and protein contents in a convenient package. The nutritional value of the edible part of the plant, particularly the edible parts such as the leaves, stems, seeds and roots have been found to be highly beneficial for the body, especially when consumed regularly, as it has high amounts of high quality minerals and trace elements and low levels of animal derived products.

As a major food source for the local populace in the districts of Kathu, Bhaktapur, Bumao, Sindhupalem, and Dharamshala, the crop has been used traditionally by the people in these regions for preparing a variety of meals. The rich and creamy taste makes the rice delicious and popular, which makes it an ideal addition to the diet of most people across the nation. The availability of a variety of ethnic Indian and local foods prepared using the popular gourd makes it an excellent addition to the diet. The fast growing crop has also managed to create a niche for itself as one of the most popular energy and calcium-rich foods in the market today, and is gradually gaining ground as a perfect alternative to the traditional wheat-based products.
