Attic painting is among the oldest artwork forms in India. Old painted pictures of Indian folks in the attics are normally quite appealing, since they possess high relief and splendor. Attic painting also known as basket painting or kanji is usually done by skilled artists with thick paint on canvas. The paint used is quite thick and gives the picture a translucent quality. The Indian tradition of fine arts and crafts has given this form of painting an icon status, along with other crafts like embroidery, sculpting, metal work, and handloom work.
Warli painting is perhaps one of the most well-known and traditional Indian art forms. This type of painting originated from the Western Ghats of North India and its pictorial tradition has been preserved till date. Some of the renowned Warli painters include J.R.R. Bidhan, Anish Kapoor, and Madhubala Murthy. Another prominent new art form in India is cave paintings. Most of the cave paintings that we see in India are of Hindu gods and goddesses. However, over time, as Indian society has become more secularized and some religions have gone into a period of decline, some of these old religious art form have also become forgotten.
