Too much money is being paid to sports stars or entertainers as incentives for doing what they do best and even at times without thinking or caring about the consequences. Sports just like other forms of entertainment or recreation have become a money making business for those involved. The question is: Is it fair to pay athletes, entertainers or other sports people so much if it does not serve any valuable purpose?
For example, think about the amount of money that goes into advertising sports merchandise, advertisements, and even sponsoring of events. How much value does the value of these goods and services provide to society in general? And if society as a whole is being shortchanged when it comes to the provision of these goods and services by way of these kinds of entertainments, why should we allow this to happen? How can anyone claim that the sports activities are useful for entertainment when there is no productive use to society as a whole?
Further, if sports people feel that they get a free ride on this, then they will continue to do what they are doing. After all, this is how things work in the free market. The consumer demands the product at the price he deems reasonable and the seller responds with his production at the lowest price. Sports people feel that they are getting a break when the entertainers take advantage of the athlete’s good name, pay them a bundle for their services and in exchange, get a relatively paltry percentage of the sales. This is unfair, to say the least.
How would society feel if instead of the famous entertainers and athletes getting a pay day, the general population is paying the price for their goods and services? Of course, the price would be in the form of fewer jobs and higher prices for goods and services. What would society do then? If society cannot produce more workers, what would society do then? There would be a decrease in the standard of living which would result in more poverty and in turn, more unemployment.
In other words, if everyone feels that they are getting a raw deal from their jobs and that the entertainer’s jobs are just too good to risk, then society ultimately falls apart. This is why it is important to make sure that the athlete’s work is fair. If it is not fair, then society suffers as well. The entertainment industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and it benefits hugely from ensuring that sports stars and entertainers are fairly compensated for their services.
Nowadays, many people tend to get offended when they hear about pay-to-play. It is very clear that this type of sports entertainment system benefits one group at the expense of another. In addition, the entertainment companies realize that to cater to the demands of the extreme Left, they have to offer plenty of seating for the same folks who might otherwise be upset by such an arrangement. Thus, you often find seats available at the back of the theatre or in the front. This is done in order to provide a decent view for those people who wish to watch but are not willing to pay for it.
It is also understandable that the pay-to-play system might upset some people. After all, who wants to pay for something that is not for free? Some people even feel that they are being robbed. On the other hand, if the athlete truly believes that he or she is doing a good job by playing in the pay-to-play sports leagues, then they should not have to worry about such things.
The reality is that too much money is being paid to sports stars and entertainers because that is how the business works today. People are willing to pay for the services that these people offer. Sports organizations have to offer better accommodations and quality of life improvements for their players as well. That is just the way it is. If an entertainer wants to earn more money, then he or she should simply do what they want to do instead of focusing on what people want.
