Amor Fati, the philosophical text from the Arabic language, has been called a literary masterpiece in Latin and English language. It is translated into more than 60 languages around the world, including Italian, French, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and German. In addition, it has inspired more than one play, poem, song and story. The Latin phrase “amor fati” literally means “love for fat”.
As translated into English, the original philosophical term “amor fati” is “loving desire”, an idea that has been developed into many philosophical theories throughout history. According to the most famous Greek philosopher Aristotle, desire is a part of human nature that dominates human activities and drives all actions. The other philosophers, some of them from the Middle Ages, added to this idea by developing their own theories on how to achieve amor fati, and how the concept can be applied to different situations. For them, amor fati is the driving force that brings about intellectual creativity and artistic geniuses such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and others.
Most philosophers agree that desire is part of human nature; however, there are some who dispute this idea. For them, desire is nothing more than a mental state that could be overcome and prevented. However, those who support the idea that desire is part of human nature to feel that amor fati is part of human philosophy and that the absence of desire is what makes philosophy futile. Regardless of which philosophy is correct, there is one thing that is very clear – all of them agree that love, beauty, virtue, goodness, and happiness are the cornerstones of life, and that the pursuit of these things is what makes the world a better place.
