Thumri is a newly formed musical group from Lucknow, in northern India. It was formed around two years ago by Ashok Kumar and Subodh Gupta, all from the state of Lucknow in India. They were very young when they started to learn music, from their fathers. After that, they attended classes of Kaikaku Music, an internationally famous music form from India. There, they tried to mimic their dads, but they soon discovered that it’s much harder to play than they thought it was. After they left the classes, they were amazed to find out that they had developed their own style which is called “Thumri”.
The music in Thumri is not classical, it’s very different from other types of Indian music. The main reason why they called their musical style ‘Thumri’ is because it’s made using traditional instruments and methods. Some of the instruments that are used in Thumri include drums (such as the Banaras), wooden flutes, guitar, mandolin, sitar, trumpet etc. Apart from that, most of the songs are sung in the traditional Indian Devanagari or Veda singing style.
One of the most famous musicians from this region of India, who is known for his amazing guitar work, is Sukhwinder Singh. His musical style is called “Punjabi Saxophone”. Apart from that, there have been many other musical artists who have gained global recognition for their Thumri music form, such as Manish Malhotra, Jai Uttal, Sukhwinder Singh, Gurdas Mann and others. Their music is very unique and has transcended various borders to become an integral part of Indian and International music culture.
