STUDENT : ROLE IN NATION BUILDING

The student’s role in a Nation building project goes beyond classroom learning. The students in a Nation building program have an opportunity to change the Nation and to mold the future of that Nation. In a Nation building program, students are given a role in molding the future policies and decisions of the United States. They play a leading role in shaping our future. In fact, in my opinion, the students who get the most benefit out of a nation-building program are the black students.

The student’s role in a nation-building program is overwhelmingly minority and poor. Therefore, many of these students will be far behind their more well off and advanced peers by the time they enter school. In order for us to have a just and equitable society, we must have an educational system that is equal for all. Our nation cannot have injustice if we do not address the issues that prevent some students from getting a good education. A majority of our students go to poor or minority schools.

Some students, who live in gated communities, have to walk an extra mile to school. Others walk in the gated communities on their own. There are other students who are trapped in sub-standard schools with little hope of an educational advancement. These students need additional support, resources, and programs to ensure that they have a positive and successful experience in school. In my opinion, we cannot continue to deny the needs of our most vulnerable students.

The current school systems need to change. They are failing our students. I have a few suggestions about this. We must create schools where all students can access the resources they need. These resources should be made easily accessible and available to all students.

Currently, there are some private schools in my district that violate the Title VI and the FHA regulations. These schools are not properly funded. This is a sad state of affairs. I believe that the students are deprived of equal opportunity in education. I also believe that there are problems with some aspects of a discipline such as corporal punishment. An inclusive approach is needed so that our students feel welcome at school.

I would like to see the creation of magnet schools. These schools would focus on the students’ behavioral issues and provide additional resources such as peer intervention programs. The focus of the schools should not just be on academics. I think in today’s world many students are being neglected.

There has been a lot of discussion in the schools regarding the development of a new discipline, which focuses on students’ emotional and behavioral issues. I think this would be a great idea. I believe that there are good programs already in place such as Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies and the School Negative Behavior Initiative. If these programs are strengthened these schools will certainly show improvement in students’ behavior.

We should try to get role models to teach in our schools. This can be done by hiring a teacher who has actually been a student of yours. Students tend to imitate their teachers. I believe that it makes sense to take advantage of this and choose someone who has successfully taught in your school. If you cannot afford to pay for a new teacher, this can easily be accomplished by making a list of schools that you have enjoyed going to and find the students who worked there. I know that this is something that a lot of parents are trying to figure out how to do.

Encourage your students to volunteer to help out at the school. Many students feel that they are not given a chance to make a difference in the school and this can lead to negative behavior. A great way to help your students make a difference is to encourage them to become a volunteer. This can be done by having them sign up for different volunteering groups. I know that there are many students who have a hard time taking the first steps but this is something that can be overcome.

Get involved with the student and parent dialogue on school safety. I know that there have been some changes that have occurred within the schools in terms of safety. I am sure that there are still many students who do not feel safe walking alone at night or walking on their own during the day. I believe that by implementing good programs such as patrol cars and having a zero tolerance policy for violence on campus that the students will feel safer. If the students feel safer, they will be more likely to participate in safe and good programs.

Remember, the students are an important part of your school’s success. If you take care of them you will have a successful school. There are some students who may struggle in a particular area of the school but there are many students who excel in all areas. Even though it is your responsibility to teach the students, you must remember that the students will also need support from the teachers and administration. By giving your students this support you will be able to mold their future.
