(WHO) WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

The World Health Organization, WHO, is an intergovernmental agency of the United Nations concerned with global public health. Its main goal is “the achievement by all peoples of the highest conceivable level of health’. WHO is very much regarded as a symbol of credibility for those who are involved in health management? It has also been a reference point for policy makers and practitioners from different fields of medicine. For many years now, the WHO has been providing assistance to those who are affected by chronic diseases.

According to its mandate, the WHO is committed ‘to coordinate the effort of all Parties to achieve the greatest degree of fitness for a human population capable of maintaining its cultural and economical diversity’. There has been much criticism regarding the performance of the WHO. This criticism is mainly because of its inability to respond to emergencies and epidemics that have threatened the security of the world’s people. It has also been criticized for not being able to protect the world’s health effectively when calamities strike. However, these criticisms should not be misconstrued since the performance of WHO has been consistently high in the past.

According to Dr. Walraven, former WHO Director-General, “WHO has been able to deal successfully with all its tasks and crises without losing its credibility or its focus on its core functions”. He went on to say that there have been periods where WHO had achieved its objectives but there were also times when its performance has been questioned seriously. He went on to state, “The world health organization had its problems in the early 1990’s but still is able to meet its commitments and responsibilities”. He also added, “The achievements during this period gave hope to the WHO and also to the people of its field.

WHO continues to work actively on issues that affect health? The organization undertakes global activities such as world health days. In fact, WHO is one of the largest intergovernmental agencies coordinating health problems of millions of people all over the world.  The work of WHO is highly specialized and requires a lot of resources and funding, which is why it sometimes becomes difficult for it to keep up its pace with the increasing number of health problems.

WHO is the lead agency for combating diseases affecting the health of the global population? Its major role is to coordinate efforts of public health and develop policies and strategies to control and prevent diseases affecting the people. In addition, it organizes free screening for health risks and conducts epidemiological research on health problems all over the world. Moreover, the organization has developed international response systems to deal with emergencies that arise suddenly.

WHO is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) that is a United Nations body. It is one of the organs that make up the intergovernmental agency of the world health organization. The other members of this organization are the governments of different countries that have agreed to cooperate in the fight against diseases that are threatening the health of humanity. WHO is funded by the United Nation and is run through an intergovernmental agency. Through this institution, member states contribute to its budget.

WHO is very concerned about the issue of world health? It has its own research arm that continuously undertakes studies on health issues and brings them to the attention of policy makers and the public. The group takes preventive measures for diseases that affect the population. It also conducts researches on new developments in the field of health and disseminates information to the public on health and nutrition issues. There are some sections that are devoted wholly to spreading awareness on diseases that affect the environment and animals.
